Vermont Quality Meats cultivates connections with farmers throughout Vermont to supply VQM with premium meats, poultry and game birds, to include lamb, goat, pork, veal, beef, rabbit, poultry, and quail and pheasant. Through VQM we are able to help Vermont’s small farms secure a market for their meats and help to provide farmers with a sustainable income, while providing chefs with some of the best foods available on the market.

    Owner Gene Nantel has 54 years of experience raising and selling rabbits. He also assists other farmers in starting up their own operations and provides continuing support and education in rabbitry. Located in Orwell, Vermont, Gene raises hormone and antibiotic free rabbits. With the help of his wife, Elizabeth, and his daughter, Jennifer, he handles the entire operation from buying and raising the rabbits, to cleaning, packaging, and delivering them to his buyers. Gene says that he wouldn’t sell anything that he wouldn’t eat himself, and by doing it all he can control the quality of his product for his customers. He says rabbit farming is just like any other farm operation in that it is a seven-day-a-week job. Rabbits are particularly sensitive creatures so consistency in their feeding and care is very important. At any given time, Gene may have up to 400 rabbits on his farm. They reach maturity at about 10 weeks of age. Gene and his wife have been married for 42 years and have 4 daughters and one grandson.
